About the Publication

The Phenomenologist brings together Ellis Amdur’s observations, experiences and often uncompromising opinions on Aikidō and Budō. Amdur trained intensively in Aikidō in Japan before devoting himself to classical Japanese martial traditions, becoming a licensed instructor in Araki-ryū and Tenshin Bukō-ryū. His perspective combines decades of hands-on practice with extensive historical research.
Presented as an extended interview, the book examines Aikidō from angles rarely addressed in conventional martial arts writing. Amdur discusses its relationship with Daitō-ryū, contrasts the past and present culture of the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, reflects on Yoshio Kuroiwa—one of his most significant Aikidō influences—and tackles questions of power, cross-training, politics and the evolution of the art.
Personal, provocative and grounded in experience, The Phenomenologist offers neither homage nor dismissal, but a critical examination of Aikidō by someone who has experienced it from both inside and outside its world.

If aikidō frames itself as some tender blending with things, where we both are smiling on the mat, where we never experience any fear, where we never experience any power…
It’s a waste of time in my view”.
